On day one, I felt my stomach ache Turned off the news, but the shock stayed On day two, I felt my heart race Ran mile after mile, trying to match it's pace And if you would’ve told me I’d be fine After watching days and lives just go on by I’d say you’re lying On day eight, I felt numb to the weight/wait Stared at the screen in a distracted way But on day twelve, I felt the pain Not sure for who, but I cried all day And if you would’ve told me I’d be fine After watching days and lives just go on by I’d say you’re lying On day thirty three, I lost track of the days Forget self improving, why get up in the morn-ing and On day fifty one, I felt the rage Why now, why me, then all I felt was shame And if you would’ve told me I’d be fine After watching days and lives just go on by I’d say you’re lying But today, I recall good days That at the time were hard to see that way Cause from day one, it was too simple to say That "I'll be fine," but we survived anyway

All the Same 03:39
We stand in line at the grocery six feet apart Still buy the same comfort food our mom's mom bought We walk round the block with masks on our face Still smile at the neighbor we knew from first grade in... These unprecedented times Unlike any war or disease that we’ve seen before These unprecedented times I can’t help but see, our love is the same We quarantine in our houses for months at a time Still find videos of cats make us smile We pace in our rooms to feel in control With the same exact bodies we had before all of... These unprecedented times Unlike any war or disease that we’ve seen before These unprecedented times I can’t help but see, our love is the same Students missing out on their graduations Friends not getting to hug each other goodbye Nurses putting their lives out on the line All for each other We do it for each other We’ve always done it for each other We’ll always do it for each other Cause this love is the same And maybe the best thing to change with our new normal Will be expressing this love we’ve always had for each other

The doves on the wires are singing their tune Their major, cascading melodies make me croon But never has springtime been so damn off course This season of rebirth has death on our minds The buds on the branches are starting to bloom Their pinks, blues and yellows make me all but swoon But never has springtime been so damn off course This season of rebirth has death on our minds The sunbeams on my skin give me a tan hue Their warmth makes me think that I am immune

No disorientation, But graduating has never felt more disorienting You’ll still need a gown, But you can trade your cap for a mask for now I know you were excited To walk the stage, hit the road, wanna start right now I know you were excited, But I guess this is what it feels like To be starting your life… at the end of the world Online graduation, Your diploma and and handshake kept six feet away Pomp and circumstance Doesn’t mean that much with all these funeral songs I know you were excited To walk the stage, hit the road, wanna start right now I know you were excited, But I guess this is what it feels like To be starting your life… at the end of the world And I know that this feels like the end of the world And this song’s too sweet for the bitterness you feel, But I guess what I’d like to tell you I guess what I’d like to tell me I guess what we’d like you to tell us Is you still need us to start our lives Even if it’s the end of the world "May 16th is your day," They say, as others lives are taken away But maybe all you can do Is start living like they would right… now

I want something to be happy about Give me good news or a joke or two And I’ll jump for joy, I’ll laugh out loud, and dance silly ‘round the room I want something to be proud about Give me some praise or an award or two And I’ll act surprised, I’ll even blush, and thank everyone I knew Yeah I… promise this time That I’ll… try to enjoy this ride I want something to be driven about Give me a hobby or a job or two And I’ll put in the work, I’ll clock in first, and believe in everything I do I want something to feel about Give me some drama or a crisis or two And I’ll write it down, I’ll feel it out, be inspired to write a song that's true Yeah I… promise this time That I’ll… try to enjoy this ride But when I say I want something to be happy about It isn’t really that I need anything I just want the ability to love everything I already have So that I… can promise this time That I’m… gonna enjoy this ride

Waking up to texts from my friends sharing songs that help My mom combining flours through the shortage to make homemade bread Listening to my dad singing country from his garage Getting summer feet when it’s only been early spring These are the things that I hope that we keep after quarantine Dancing 'round the kitchen to oldies you can hear outside Wearing out the grass with my sister playing badminton Having tea parties with my college friends over Zoom Observing every stage of the flowers blooming day by day These are the things that I hope that we keep after quarantine Learning the name of the neighbor’s dog I always walked by Curling up in bed with my sister binge-ing Avatar My friend making us Sims so that we can be in the same place Crying when I see the ocean coming at Colt State Park These are the things that I hope that we keep after quarantine Braiding my mom’s hair watching Gina at 1PM Playing games of cribbage with my dad on the porch he built Joking that the cat already likes to keep six feet away My family saying, "See you in the morning," cause we know we will These are the things that I hope that we keep after quarantine Our faith, our grace Our hope we’ll heal in time Our strength, our drive Our need to look inside Our joy, our trust To love while we’re alive Ourselves, each other Our hope, I hope, our hope That these are the things that we’ll all keep after quarantine

about

The "Songs From Quarantine" album was written between 4/28/20 and 6/29/20 about the topics that came up for me during the stay at home order and re-opening phases of coronavirus (cancelled graduation, the stages of grief, the universal experience, boredom and more boredom, and leaning on friends and family, to name a few). All the songs were recorded live at (you guessed it...) my socially distanced home. The songs are listed in the order that they were written and the many drafts required in writing them make up the background of the album cover. In doing so, the album represents the healing process I underwent through songwriting during that strange, scary, sad, confusing, and also joyful time... maybe you can relate? Here's to our continued collective healing. <3

All songs written, performed, and recorded by Morgan Johnston... but also that is an underestimation of the amount that other people have supported me during this pandemic. One such person was, and continues to be, my Quarantine Buddy, Chelsea, to which I say "yip yip, enviar!" This album is for her.
